This is a perfect example of why most Eye Witness testimony doesn't fair so well in court.
Sooo... as it turns out - Great Uncle Stanton was indeed an Uncle to someone. Just NOT to me ;) After a lovely stroll down memory lane with my parents this morning, I think I may finally have all my facts straight. Obviously, the memories you collect as a 3 year old cannot be completely trusted... go figure. Guy Stanton was actually my Dad's Grandad, and my Great Grandfather. The loss of his thumb occurred during a Roping accident, and it was just the One thumb... not both. Mom also told me that he would often make up his own lyrics to "Trip Trot to Boston" depending on who his audience was... a favorite of his for me was:
Trip trot to Boston,
to buy a loaf of cake.
When we get there,
we'll meet up with a snake.
Pick up a stone,
and break his backa-bone.
Then we'll go a gallopin',
a gallopin' home.
This absolutely makes my heart sing! Sigh. Don'tcha just love that. And look... here he is. My Great Grandad Stanton... Exactly as I remember him... except for the confusion about the thumbs ;)
Thanks Mom & Dad!
And here's another happy memory for me. Henry's first meeting with Santa. A totally normal and lovely looking man. Whew! What a relief! And Hen took an instant liking to him. Rushed right up to meet him - "Hi. I'm Henry." And sat on his lap with zero hesitation. Santa was so good with him and even chatted him up for a bit. H was over the moon and beaming from ear to ear. Once he was done going through all the particulars of his list with Santa, he enjoyed decorating a cookie, making a candy cane ornament and decorating a stocking with his name on it. Everything was so well organized - it was a wonderful experience and totally worth the $9 we spent for a semi-private (there were only about 30 or so kids) meeting with The Big Man himself. I'm so glad Henry had such a fantastic time. And when he was finally ready to leave he said: "Let's go for a little drive!"
What a splendid day.
And I never once got the heebie jeebies ;)
